Singing at Neto's Sausage(now closed) karaoke night with a friend
Open mic performances are some of my favorite. The atmosphere is supportive and the performances vary in genre and difficulty. The bay area has so many open mic opportunities; one for each day of the week! The Bay Area Open Mic Calendar will you get you started if your looking for the chance to perform or listen.
It seems like a revolutionary idea but open mic's have been going on for centuries! Cafe Zimmermann, in Leipzig, was home to the historic Collegium Musicum started by Telemann in 1702 and later was taken over by Bach. Collegium Musicum was a group of people devoted to playing music for fun. Bach's famous Coffee Cantata was first performed at Cafe Zimmermann. The cantata (really it's a tiny comic opera) is the tail of young girl who loves coffee and in the eyes of her father, her obsession has gone to far.
My favorite part of this Cantata is the aria, "Ei, wie schmeckt der Coffee süsse"
Ah! How sweet the coffee's taste is,
Sweeter than a thousand kisses,
Milder than sweet muscatel.
Coffee, coffee, I must have it,
And if someone wants to treat me,
Ah, my cup with coffee fill!
