Matt and I were looking at Cincinnati's schedule deciding which concert to attend and when I saw Sufjan Stevens (pronounced Soofhyan) on the "Music Now" program, I had to go. I have to confess though, while I'm crazy about his christmas albums, my sister is the TRUE fan in the family. "I've always been fond of Sufjan, His twee melodies and signature banjo strummings provided the perfect background murmurings for my years in college; a subtle cacophany to score study marathons and late night strolls. I can recall sitting on the bathroom counter with my roommate, venting our woes of unrequited love, while Sufjan crooned to us sympathetically. "Futile Devices" mourned with us, "To be Alone with You" encapsulated our longing, and "The Dress Looks Nice on You" fed us the courage to go out and have our 20-year-old hearts broken all over again. "
Don't you just love her? I've made a little Sufjan sampler for you below with all the songs mentioned above. ALSO his new album "Carrie and Lowell" is coming out March 31, so I included "Should have known better" which was released as a single. ( you can stream the whole album here)Woo hoo!
Anyways, I got chills listening to Sufjan's voice with the orchestra. I was a good audience member and did not take any photos during the performance (even though I wanted to soooo badly...). Matt and I only attended the second day of the concert, and we regret not going to both nights. The National played a collection of their music with the orchestra and John Adam's conducted his piece "Short ride in a fast machine".
I believe that if classical music is going to survive and thrive, there must be more collaborations like this. Here is an youtube video showing "The planets" done with the Navarra string quartet and the New Trombone Collective. Just imagine it with full orchestra...STUNNING. Seriously.
